I don’t know if you are like me, but I have a little bit of a sweet tooth. I like Dove chocolates. I like ice cream. I like Oreo cookies. I like Little Debbie snacks. I like cookie dough. I like…I guess I better stop there, but you get the picture. I like sweets. The thing about sweets is that they keep you coming back for more. Even when I am trying to quit eating them, there is something about their sweetness that just keeps me going back for more. We all know the results of eating too many sweets, we add extra pounds. To quit eating sweets, it truly takes a lot of self-control.
Now the sweets that I have mentioned are not good for me, but the Psalmist mentions something sweet that is good for us–God’s word. In verse 103 of Psalm 119 he says, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.” God’s word is sweeter than all the things that I mentioned earlier. However, desiring the sweetness of God’s word is a good thing. The Psalmist even mentions some of the positive aspects of God’s word. He states how it is fixed in the heavens which makes it something we can always trust. He talks about how in God’s word he found precepts that gave him life. He mentions that God’s word delivered him from his enemies. God’s word even made him wise. There is so much sweetness to God’s word is should be something that we desire everyday. It is a sweet that is okay to continually devour. The good news about God’s word is that instead of making our waistlines grow it makes our souls grow. So today if you want to reach for something sweet, reach for God’s word.
