As we began our new series of messages yesterday entitled “Summer Vacation,” I shared my enthusiasm for everything that is a part of this series. Summer is my favorite season–at least until fall arrives. I’ll admit it’s a tough competition between summer and fall, but if you made me choose, I’d take summer. Then there’s vacation–I love to travel and experience different places, to see the world from a little different perspective. Summer and vacation just go together. But then there’s the main focus of our series of messages and these devotionals and the driving force of Genesis 1–God’s word. Into the nothingness, God spoke, and whatever God spoke came to be. That’s not always how it goes when we speak, is it? My words don’t always correspond to my actions or to the actions of others. I can say something with no follow through, but when God said, “Let there be light,” there was light. And that was just day one. Day after day, God spoke, and the world came to exist, including humanity, created in the image of God. We see in Genesis 1 what Jesus would remind us of in his moment of temptation, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, ESV). So today, with a new series, a new season, a new week, let’s marvel at, remember, and live according to the universe-creating, life-sustaining power of the word of God. May there be less space between our words and our actions as there is less space between God’s word and our hearts.
