“Who is like me?”
What a question. Given the context of this verse the answer is very clear. There is no one like God. There is no one that can compare to him. Take a second and try to mentally list out as many attributes of God as you can. Loving. Just. Righteous. Compassionate. Omnipotent. Omniscient. Patience. Personal. Now, realize that he not only has these qualities, he created them and perfectly displays them towards us his children. In the perfect definition of the word, God is awesome.
But the prophet has a specific idea in mind. There is an important title the God has in verse six that leads to a direct application for his people. God is our Redeemer. This is true not because of us. There is no quality of man that demands God be our redeemer. Chapter 44 actually lays out in great detail the foolishness of man and his constant tendency to run to idols and forget God. God is our redeemer because thats who he is.
So what’s the application for his people then? Verse eight says, “Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it!” We have the ability to live without fear, but it requires remembering who God has declared himself to be. I don’t have to worry about past sin; God is redeemer. I don’t have to fear uncertain circumstances; God is our rock. I don’t have to fear my enemy; God is my defender. When we take time daily to remember who God is we have the confidence to live this life free of fear and worry. My prayer for you today is that you take time to remember who God is, give to him your worry and anxiety, and just today, live without fear.
