These days, it can be hard to find two people who agree on anything. Nothing is too big or too small to start an argument. I think that’s why I find it so striking in today’s reading that John the Baptist and Jesus preached exactly the same message, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” It’s simple and to the point, and it’s surely a summary of more extensive remarks. However, these two men demonstrate a remarkable unity of mission and message. John was preparing the way for one mightier than himself, calling people to change their thinking because Jesus was coming. Jesus was showing people what that change of thinking looked like, responding to temptation with God’s words rather than the devil’s schemes.
Jesus is coming. Jesus has come. Both of those things are still true, and they still lead to the same message. It’s one for us to hear and one for us to share, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Where does your thinking need to change so that it agrees with the reality that Jesus has come? Who needs to hear from you that Jesus has come?
