James 3-5

Read James 3-5.

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

James 3:13, ESV

Who is wise? With so many competing voices flooding the airwaves and social media, it can be hard to answer that question. Who is wise? Who really gets it? To whom should I really listen? The person with the loudest voice or the most followers? The person with the greatest financial success? What is the mark of the person who is wise? What often seems difficult to discern, James makes pretty plain. The one who is wise will reveal his or her wisdom with meekness. That might not be the kind of answer we like, but it’s the one James offers. Jealousy and selfish ambition may gain you a massive following or help you amass great wealth, but they will eventually lead to chaos and destruction. Wisdom looks differently from selfish ambition in every way.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

James 3:17, ESV

Who is wise? Watch for those who seek peace rather than chaos and walk with gentleness rather than jealousy, those who are willing to listen and whose lives bear good fruit. And even more, draw near in humility to God who is working to make you more like the One who shows His works in the meekness of wisdom.
